And you guys wonder why Gibbs is one of my favorite emcees breathing right now. Not only does he have a great ear for beats, he also picks dope, unconquered (or rarely conquered) ‘industry’ instrumentals to rock over. Not just the standard “hot” song of the moment, that 4,000 other people have also remade. And that my friends, is what separates the emcees who will thrive in this industry and the ones who are simply lemmings. No shots, of course.
Here he goes in over Ras Kass’ “Understandable Smooth”, which is quite possibly my favorite song from the Waterproof MC. Ras’ version got caught up in label politics (which has plagued most of his career) and sample clearance issues, so this one has been a file sharing and (mostly) internet only gem – unless you got the white label, of course.
This is #91 of the DJBooth.net’s Freestyle Series.
