Mikkey Halsted – “Liquor Store”
Last night Lupe showed some serious Chi-Town unity, by bringing out some of the Chi’s finest to rock with him on stage. After his Chicago-inspired vignette, Lu brought out Mikkey Halsted to perform his classic track, “Liquor Store”. Then after performing “Go Go Gadget” flow, Lupe switched the beat and finished the song over the instrumental for “Hay”, before bringing out his Westside bredren, Crucial Conflict, who then went on to perform “Hay”. Cru Con brought some of the craziest energy I’ve ever seen to the stage, and it was truly something special. Props to Lu for that.
Dude ‘N’ Nem and a rapper I was unfamiliar with named The Kid (I’d like to hear more from him), also got some stage time. I don’t have video for this, but I do believe RTC and Virgil at the Hornet, got this whole piece. I’ll repost if so.
Oh and my bad on the vid cut-offs. It was the end of the night and my battery was dead and memory stick was full. I mean, the show was over two hours long, so what do you expect?
Crucial Conflict – “Hay”
Perhaps the dopest thing (to me at least) about last night’s show, was the fact that Lupe took it back to where it all started – the mixtapes. He did some of his dopest pre-F&L material, but unfortunately, most of the new jacks in the crowd had no clue what they were hearing. “What’s a Lupe the Killer?”
Last night was a real treat because you NEVER get to hear him perform tracks like “Lupe The Killer” and “Failure”. Obviously “Fire” is a new record, but the other three I filmed are easily three of my favorite Lupe songs of all time. I still distinctly remember the first time I heard “Failure” and thinking “WTF”.
Lupe claims he’s coming back, and he’s coming back harder than ever, to takeover that top spot. He told me he’s going after everyone on the MTV Hottest MCs list, no matter what and no matter who. This could get very interesting.

The Green Eyed Bandit shows Gangsta Gibbs how to rob a liquor store, on the set for a new episode of SkeeTV. Perhaps this was on the set of Fred’s video for “Fuckin’ Wit Fred”? I dunno.
But I do know that’s it’s goin’ down at the Liquor Store, Liquor Store, Liquor Store…
The Labels Tryin’ To Kill Me!! coming soon
In my interview with Lupe earlier this week, he explained that intertwined between performances, he was going to have a movie (live vignettes) running, that related to the theme of his concert: Remember 2 Smile.
In this 7 part series, Lupe touches on a wide range of personal topics including Life, Death, Art, Fame, Faith, Politics, his home town of Chicago, and finally his upcoming album, We Are Lasers. Now, during our interview, I was advised not to ask anything about Lasers, because he was going to touch on it during his show. He did, and you can find out a few details, and acronyms from watching the clip. It’s still a mystery, but don’t say you were never invited inside the mind of Wasalu Jaco.
