12. Dally Auston f/ Vic Mensa & Jean Deaux “Imperial” (2013)
If Dally Auston gets his due, all will be right with the world. Perhaps the reason so many SM members are still under the radar is that they are all so talented at rapping individually, and it’s difficult to stand out in that context. Dally himself has a lot to offer as a solo artist (check out The Wood) and this song is a prime example. The Vic verse and the Jean Deaux vocals don’t hurt, either. This also serves as a showcase of C-Sick’s (who produced for King L and Fredo Santana) versatility as a producer. Instead of hard-hitting trap (using this term loosely) sounds like his work for Fredo’s “Up Them Poles” or Louie’s “Val Venis,” we get a subdued, minimal piano loop. Everything about this song clicked.
