6. Tree – Sunday School 2
It’s safe to say that the first edition of Tree’s Sunday School series is what put him on the rap map. Critics heralded him, his fanbase ballooned and larger outlets came calling. He was no longer just the Chi’s best-kept secret. With SS1 being such a surprise hit, following up would be no small feat. Obviously, when the bar is set so high, a lot of pressure can mount.
So what did Tree do? Well, he went back to the lab and gave Sunday School a sequel – bringing it back bigger and deffer. Bigger producers, deffer features. He also took it to a real studio (Soundscape) as opposed to recording it in his closet as he did on part one. Some of that I-recorded-this-in-my-bedroom charm was missing, but the change to make it more professional was a good move. Tree delivered yet again and raised his profile even higher in the process — and even snagged a performance at the Pitchfork Music Fest over the summer. Big wins.
