Last week, Cap 1 dropped the very-dope trailer for his forthcoming mixtape, Caviar Dreams, which is due out later today (January 14th). In the trailer, Cap included some priceless vintage footage of he and Kanye rocking out in a Chicago basement together in the summer of 1998. This clip, in particular, grabbed a lot of headlines, and shows just how deep and strong Cap’s legacy in Chicago is.
Well, today we have the entire footage from this basement session — with some additional information and a backstory. The footage in question was taken in the summer of 1998 (July 11th to be exact) at a going away party for Cap 1. Cap was leaving the Chi for greener industry pastures in NYC, where he moved in order to secure his record deal with Motown, and kick-off his ongoing ‘Diary of a New Jack’ feature in The Source. Two years after the east coast move, Cap’s debut album, Through The Eyes Of A Don, hit stores (6/27/00) and the rest, as they say, is history.
At the time, Cap and Kanye were dear friends who worked closely together on music — there are even early demos of their work floating around somewhere.
So today you can feast our eyes on a rare moment in time. A time of (relative) innocence before the bright lights, big stage and bigger bucks. So here we bring you our very own: Stars They’re Just Like Us moment — live from Cap 1’s basement.
Stay tuned for Caviar Dreams.
