Complex Mag’s Magnum Opus series returns with an oral history of Common’s biggest hit to date (still!) “The Light.” Granted, this track is damn near 15 years old, so some of you might not have been around to know just how big it was at the time — a true breakout moment for Com Sense. Here he talks about how it came together and just how important it was to his career. He also chronicles going to Detroit with The Roots to link with Dilla to make it happen. The result was one of Common’s best albums, Like Water For Chocolate.
Don’t forget to grab tickets to Common’s AAHH Fest this Sunday at Union Park, where Lupe, Twista, J Hud, Lil Herb, De La Soul, etc will be performing. Also, all signs point to Kanye West as the surprise guest. You can also check out Common’s most recent feature in Chicago Mag here.
