Midwest artists dominate nominations for XXL’s Freshmen Class 2017

Words by Cory Sinclair

It’s that time of year again, where XXL starts generating buzz for their 2017 Freshmen Class issue. But before they reveal the cover, the fans get a chance to vote for their favorite artists to snag the coveted 10th spot. The polls are open for the next seven days, and close on April 2nd. The Midwest has definitely had no problem making some freshman appearances  over the past few years, especially Chicago with Chance, Bibby, Durk, Vic Mensa, Tink and G Herbo all making the list since 2014. So today, we checked out the list and saw the Midwest was dominating the nominations yet again, so we’ve listed them all below in alphabetical order.

Who made the cut? Well, look no further:

Allan Kingdom
Amir Obe
Boldy James
Famous Dex
Joey Purp
Lud Foe
M-City J.R.
Montana of 300
Rico Recklezz
Sir The Baptist
Taylor Bennett
Tee Grizzley

Best of luck to all artists nominated…

You have until midnight, April 2nd to vote for your favorite artist. You are allowed to vote 1 time every 4 hours from any system (computer, phone, etc.) Vote early and vote often.

Freddie Gibbs drops new track with Kaytranada & BadBadNotGood + reveals track list for ‘You Only Live 2wice’

Now this is en fuego. Pretty sure this is exactly what Gibbs fans have been waiting on. For his latest offering from You Only Live 2wice, Gibbs took a trip to Canada to link with both Kaytranada and BadBadNotGood who joined forces to give Fred the perfect soundscape on “Alexys.” It’s a new twist on that Pinata sound that the world loves so much. They snapped for sure. He’s also kicking some real shit on here about friends, enemies, but mostly frienemies.

You Only Live 2wice drops this Friday (3/31) at all digital retailers. Check out the track list below.

FSD Feature: Who is Drayco McCoy?

Words by Aaron Navarro

Drayco Mccoy is one of the rawest rappers in the Midwest, and I can give you two examples why. The first way is the obvious — his beats are heavy on bass and his flows are aggressive, raspy and in-your-face. The second way, you might find only from choppin’ it up with him. You can tell the youngin’ is starting to create a real path for himself, and is only looking up, only looking to improve. To Drayco, this is all just the start.

We caught up with the Naptown reppin’ 22-year-old at the FSD and Red Bull Sound Select show earlier this month. It was only his third time in Chicago, where Drayco was opening for headliners (and bonafide Chicago stars) G Herbo and Lil Bibby. From the Pacers to punk-rock, we got to learn a little bit more about what FullyAutomaticDrayco is about, and where he is going.

Check the video recap below, and peep the full conversation right under that.

Watch my interview with G Herbo for Red Bull Sound Select

A few weeks back, we convened at the Metro for our 2017 kickoff with FSD & Red Bull Sound Select. Our headliners? G Herbo and Lil Bibby. The result? About a thousand more people showed up than could get in. So it goes without saying that the sold out event was crazy.

But this has been a long time coming, as almost exactly four years ago, we did G Herbo and Bibby’s first show ever, as they opened a RBSS show at the Double Door, along some other future Chicago legends including: Tink, and the entire SaveMoney crew.

So as we brought things full circle at the Metro, we thought it was only right to interview G Herbo and catch up on what he’s been up to, what he has coming up, and what it feels like going from opener to massive headliner. Watch the full clip below.
