This week, FSD had the honor and pleasure of being a guest of Nike for their 30 year anniversary of the Air Force 1 sneaker, and the launch of the new Lunar Force 1 line. A select group of media, stylists, artists, performers, DJs and tastemakers were corralled in New York City to partake in the festivities. The theme, slogan and tagline of the event was #KeepItComing, and they more than lived up to the hashtag . But why this week you ask? Well, because the new line of Lunar Force 1’s hit select retailers today.
The Nike guests were put up in the Mondrian SOHO, where we were joined by greats like Spike Lee. All guests of the Air Foce 1 event were treated to a goodie bag which included Nike branded collectibles including the new Lunar Force 1’s. We were either blessed with the white on white’s or the digi camo joints — both of which were well received by attendees (I gotta grab those Digi’s).
On day one, the participants were gathered on a bus and whisked away to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for an afternoon of activities. The group was able to play ball and run drills on the court, as well compete for a high-profile Nike prize. Sadly, I didn’t win (surprise, surprise). After a brief tour the facility, we headed next door Nike’s Pivot Point lab, the hub for all things AF1 on their 30th anniversary. The Lunar’s were the focal point of Pivot Point, and the new kicks feature Lunarlon cushioning and Hyperfuse construction, which collide for a new wave of Force. They are more comfortable than the OGs, and after spending two full days in them — not to mention playing ball — no signs of creasing could be found (the lace locks read XXX, a nod to the milestone anniversary).
We were hosted in Pivot Point by the sneaker’s designer, who explained his concept and thought process in revamping such a legendary shoe (that’s obviously quite a bit of pressure). We were also given a sneak peek into the various styles of Lunar’s that will soon be for sale (there are a total of four different styles) – each serving a different purpose for a different daypart. Sleek, smooth and cool enough that both OG sneaker snobs and the casual purchasers can agree on.
On day two we were taken back to Barclays to participate in more AF1 activity — the most striking being the giant, digital glowing AF1 box in front of the stadium. Guests and fans were able to enter the digi box and showcase their AF1’s in front of the professional cameras and have their images propelled in front of the thousands of attendees.
Shortly thereafter, we filed into the Barclays Center to catch the newly-ignited crosstown classic between the New York Knicks and Brooklyn Nets. All #KeepItComing guests were hosted in various suites, which were seemingly all overtaken by Nike heads, employees and tastemakers. Rappers like Vado and Stalley mingled with ballplayers like Bobby Simmons and fashion forward attendees like Vashtie and Virgil Abloh. It was definitely one of the best events I’ve ever attended. First class all the way.
The Nike Lunar Force 1 will release in limited quantities on 12.12.12 in select Nike Sportswear retail locations globally. Be sure to pick up yours today.
