At FSD, we feel it is our duty to provide our faithful readers with musical content that’s entertaining but also innovative. Last year, Chicago became the “it” city in hip-hop — but with the accolades came criticism. Some critics concluded that Chicago’s success was solely based on the Drill scene — which is not completely true. The scene is a lot more well-rounded than some would lead you to believe. That being said, we’ve created a new FSD Feature entitled Lyrics To Go, where we dissect verses from some of Chicago’s most well-respected lyricists, where they discuss their best bars.
For our second installment, we feature pizza enthusiast, ShowYouSuck. We chop it up with the Treated Crew member to discuss his favorite verse of last year, the deliciously titled, “Mild Sauce.” Proceed with caution.
ShowYouSuck “Mild Sauce”
FSD: What was the significance of the title for this particular song?
ShowYouSuck: Pretty much when I made that song that was kind of like my ode to Chicago. I was working on the album and I was like, “Aw man I got this beat from Billionaire Boyscout!” He definitely has a Chicago sound, and I wanted the song to sound hella Chicago.
FSD: You referenced the world famous Treated Crew hats in the verse, “Hat more famous than I is.” Seeing the hat worn by the likes of Kanye West, Jay-Z, and now Justin Bieber, how do you feel about the hat breaking into the mainstream?
ShowYouSuck: It’s an amazing thing. I distinctly remember Mano getting back from an overseas tour with Kanye. We were standing outside of Empire [Liquors], and he told me “Yo I got this idea; I’m just going to make hats for everyone in the crew.” I was like “that’s cool!” I just never fathomed this huge of a thing. I don’t know how much the outside public sees, but even me when I go to another city; I never have to worry about anything. As soon as I get there I know I got a number of Treated Crew brothers that’s going to take care of me when I get there.
There’s people I used to look up to on blogs and listened to that now have a common bond. We’re brothers now because of the unit that we’ve created. So for me to see the hat go that far that means the ideology and the brotherhood is going far. It’s crazy it still blows my mind.
FSD: In the verse you’ve said a line, “I’m watching Death Note, no preaching dollar clef note.” What did you mean by this particular line?
ShowYouSuck: Death Note is actually an anime—I’m a huge anime fan. It’s a pretty long series, and for the past year and a half I’ve been trying to finish watching the series. I watch like four episodes in two days and fall off. That’s like the fourth time I’ve mentioned watching Death Note in a verse. Sometimes I like to put things in verses that people can follow along.
You know how you watch a comedian and they tell a joke and they bring the joke back in a re-reference—it’s called a call back in the comedy world. I like to put call backs in my verses. If I say something in a verse and it’s your first time hearing me, you would be like “Ok that’s tight!” but if you have been listening to me for like a year now, you would be like “Aw man he mentioned that in this song before!” So you get a little extra treat for people who have been following my music a little longer.
When I say, “I’m watching Death Note Death Note, no preaching dollar clef note” I’m not trying to preach to people—whatever you pick out of it is what you pick out of it. You know what? What I just realized is talking to you that there is a double entendre in that line. People die over the dollar death note, they’re preaching Creflo Dollar. I didn’t realize that until just now!
