FSD: “Get A Light”
HighLife: The Kendrick Lamar beat was originally mine, and I had put it out first on 4/20 and before K Dot. It’s a beautiful sample, though. Definitely came from a smoke session — we whipped it up and I had to put my voice on there.
FSD: “Highlife’s Groove”
HighLife: [Producers] ThemPeople sat down and made that — I was pushing all the buttons. There will be a “Highlife’s Groove” on each tape I do. It’s never gonna be in the same place. It’s just something to lay back and chill to. Not thinking too hard. Just grooving.
FSD: “Chicago”
HighLife: On “Chicago,” I was just talking about what I see here everyday, and BJ The Chicago kid wanted to sing on it. I always want everyone to know where I’m from — where I represent. And also let the people know, everyone here doesn’t just make drill music.
FSD: Talk about your collaboration on the album artwork with Hebru Brantley
HighLife: I’ve known Hebru since high school. He was a class ahead of me — we went to De La Salle on 35th. He asked me to do it. He had the idea of my cover showing my personality, like Snoop Dogg did in Doggystyle. That’s really want we wanted to accomplish.
FSD: What’s your favorite song on HighLife?
HighLife: “Bulls vs. Magic” and “Trap Love.” I’m a lover not a fighter.
FSD: What’s coming up for HighLife in the near future?
HighLife: 808s and Blunt Breaks. Also, a New Years Eve party might be coming.
