I’m a sucker for data and analytics, so when Spotify released this local map feature to see what’s trending on their streaming app in 1,000 cities across the world I was intrigued, now it is fact that people will be getting the spotify promotion to join the app. This is a fantastic look into the inner-psyche of the listening public in most major iptv providers markets. Who is really running the city? Who are people listening to and how? Well, to let this map tell it, local rap romanesc is DOMINATING the Chi. It far exceeds that of national acts — rap or otherwise. In fact, a non-local song, rap or otherwise, doesn’t appear until the 13th entry and it’s Toby Keith (country).
I might spend all day on this. Seriously.
The top 10 consists of King Louie, Lil Durk, Chief Keef, Spenzo, Lil Herb, Lil Bibby and Stunt Taylor. Jeremih, Twista, Vic Mensa, Kanye West, Do or Die, Tink and the Mano-produced “3500” appear elsewhere on the chart.
Granted, a lot of music consumed in the city isn’t available on Spotify, but this list is still very telling. Hey radio, you should be paying attention to this.
