Kanye’s Dream for TurboGrafx-16: Ye’s Links to Gaming in the World of Hip-Hop

Andrew Barber

Kanye West is a busy man, and it’s safe to say that he’s going to have many more projects for years to come. In 2018, he produced four albums with his label G.O.O.D. Music, and it seems like there’s always something in the works for him.

But Ye also has a reputation for abandoning projects before they’re finished. With everything from clothing lines to sitcoms and *ahem* an album with Drake, there are a lot of projects that never saw the light of day.

One of these projects was the much-hyped release of an album he titled TurboGrafx-16. There was a lot of hype around this album, but an album with this title never came to fruition. Gaming fans will know that the TurboGrafx-16 is a classic games console, but that’s not the only link Kanye has to the world of gaming.

Read on to learn more about this shelved album and Kanye’s link to the gaming world.

What Happened to TurboGrafx-16?

Fans got very excited about this release, only for an album to come out simply titled Ye. One might assume that he changed the name from TurboGrafx-16 to Ye instead, but according to his wife Kim Kardashian, he scrapped the entire album and rewrote it days before the release.

So we can’t help but wonder, why did he name it after a games console, and what would this album have been like if it was ever released to the public?

Kanye’s Links to Gaming

Kanye has had a long history with gaming and clearly has an interest in the industry. Back in 2016, Kanye released a trailer for a video game called Only One, named after his own song. The game shows his mother, Donda, arriving at the gates of heaven on the back of Pegasus and sprouting her own angel wings.

After being in production for over a year, it even premiered at the gaming convention E3, but the game has been in limbo ever since (pardon the pun). Nobody knows when or if this iPhone title will ever be released and there have been no recent announcements.

Gaming and the world of hip hop don’t always go hand in hand. When it comes to music and games, other genres have had a lot of success. With regards to rock music, games like Rockband and Guitar Hero have been major successes. Even in the world of casino gaming, there have been many examples of rock-themed slots such as Mild Rockers and Banana Rock, but very few hip-hop ones. With these slots, there are lots of different rock themes and influences that fans love to play, but there’s clearly a gap in the market for hip-hop.

What’s Next?

With his track record of incomplete projects, we may never get to see Kanye’s gaming dream come true. But that may not entirely be his fault. The gaming industry hasn’t embraced hip-hop the way it has other music genres, and there’s a clear gap in the market.

Who knows, perhaps Kanye will take advantage of this and finally release a game with hip-hop influences. It’s an interesting project that we’d love to see more of, so – fingers crossed – he returns to it soon.
