Modern day casino resorts are large sprawling complexes that often have several hundred thousand square feet of gaming floor, as well as much more space for other amenities. In fact some casino resorts rank among the largest buildings in the world of any kind. But which are the very biggest?
Well, this might surprise you, especially if you’re American, but not a single Las Vegas casino resort hits the top five in terms of sheer size globally. There are actually two in America, but they’re both tribal operations. These are the five biggest casinos in the world, four by gambling floor space and the number one by total casino resort size.
Casino de Campione in Italy Has Lots of Floor Space but Less Games
Europe’s largest casino by sheer building size, and also the largest in the world by size of the gaming floor, Italy’s Casino de Campione is certainly an impressive structure. It has, in total, 590,000 square feet of gaming space.
However, it rarely appears on lists of the world’s biggest casinos. That’s because the gaming floor is hugely spaced out and there are not actually that many games compared to some – and it’s also had a troubled history of closing down for years at a time.
The Casino de Campione may look nice but it’s collection of games can’t match the number of online casino slots available at a top operator. It’s just that simple – even the biggest casinos in the world can’t match the convenience and game variety you get playing online.
Founded in 1917 and then closed and rebuilt in 1933, the casino took on its current form in 2007 with a striking $150 million modernist design. It’s also on the shores of Lake Lugano in the Swiss alps, giving it picturesque surroundings you wouldn’t quite get in Vegas or Macau.
The Venetian, Macau, China is an Enormous Integrated Resort
The Venetian in the Chinese special administrative region of Macau is one of the most spectacular casino resorts in the world. Designed as a larger twin to the Venetian Las Vegas by owner Las Vegas Sands, the resort is the 10th largest building in the world by total floor space.
The casino has 550,000 square foot of floor space, but it has far more slots and table games packed in that it’s true Italian rival. The Venetian Macau fits more than 3400 slot machines and 800 table games into its expansive and opulent casino floor.
It has four different sections, half a dozen private gambling rooms and an attached hotel specifically for guests who want to stay as close as possible to the casino. Which is not to mention its ridiculous amount of other attractions including a 15,000 seater arena and an indoor canal complete with gondola rides.
WinStar Casino in Oklahoma was the Title Holder for a Long Time
WinsStar World Casino Resort in Thackerville, Oklahoma, had, between 2003 and 2007 (when the Venetian Macau opened), the biggest casino floor in the world.
At 520,000 square feet it is still massive – and it also has over 10,000 slot machines. Which no other casino on this list can boast. It also has 55 poker tables across two dedicated rooms and more than 150 table games. Outside of the gambling it boasts two dozen restaurants, a 6000 seater concert arena for the casino to book music performers and just shy of 1500 hotel rooms.
It’s also a very popular casino resort, being around an hour away from the Dallas-Fort Worth area just across state lines in Texas. Where casino gambling is very much illegal. So, it’s a big market. And it has the facilities to match.
MGM Cotai is Another Giant Macau Resort
Coming in at number four for largest casino gaming floor in the world is another Macau-based casino. The Asian gambling hub has arguably done Las Vegas better than Las Vegas itself in the past few years – at least in terms of business. Arguably Sin City is still the global cultural capital of gambling, but that doesn’t make MGM Cotai any less impressive.
Named after the now famous Cotai Strip – Macau’s equivalent to the Vegas Strip – MGM Cotai is hugely striking architecturally and also has 500,000 square feet of gaming floor. It offers:
- 175 table games
- 1500 slot machines
- Several high limit rooms
- 18 table poker room with regular high limit tournaments
Outside of the poker, this giant block building also contains a huge ornamental and tropical garden with more than 100,00 plants and an extensive world-class spa facility.
Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut has the Largest Casino Resort Footprint
So this one just squeaks into the top 10 by largest casino floor – four of the other five being in Macau – but Foxwoods is the largest by total casino resort footprint. So it deserved a mention on this list.
Foxwoods Casino Resort in Connecticut, USA, has more than 3500 slots across 344,000 square feet of gaming space. This is all split across six architecturally and decoratively distinctive zones, inspired by Native American folklore.
It has 250 table games, but is more notable for having the third largest poker room in the world. That covers 114 tables, with dozens of cash games, tournaments and even games of different poker variants running at any one time.
