Kanye West & Frex, 1991. ‘Dead Poets To Society’
An extremely detailed and comprehensive history of Chicago Hip-Hop spanning from 1990-1995 has recently hit Facebook. With the tagline “HIP-HOP originated in South Bronx, New York City. Chicago made it Ill,” the Chicago Hip-Hop Archive features rare pictures, pluggers and videos from the early days of the Chicago scene.
Current stars like Kanye West, Common and Traxster show up, while crews like Dem Dare are fully showcased. Concert fliers, calendars and now-defunct store advertisements of yesteryear also appear.
I encourage you to do your research and spend some time perusing this page. It’s a true walk down memory lane, and history lesson for those too young or not around for that era. I’ve included a handful of the pics and pluggers below, but you really need to shoot over to the page to get the full scope.
Dope! (EUP)
RIP K-Tone. I was just thinking bout you the other day.
That page has been on FB for 4 years like that. It’s good that it’s mentioned but ya’ll late.
I gave Vakill a Blue Gargoyle flyer from the early 90’s featuring
Vakill & Mixx Massacre
and
Cavalier (aka Twista).
The Archive was created ca. 2009 as Facebook was still novel; and, at the time, proved a viable platform to communicate our region’s invaluable contribution to that genre and era. Regards to Dave Dred for keeping it alive, and to Chicago’ Hip-Hop Community for inspiring and supporting it.
