Last week I was out in LA for the Grammys, and was able to attend the listening session for Big Sean’s new album, Dark Sky Paradise, in the theater room at the Soho House in West Hollywood. I was running around like crazy, so I didn’t have much time to write about the album while out there. But I can assure you that it’s dope, and going to make some serious noise. Sean’s growth in the game is pretty much unmatched, and he’s blown past most of his competition to become an a-list talent.
Need proof? Well, he was able to bring out everyone from Kanye to Jay Z to J. Lo to Justin Bieber to his show at the House of Blues on Grammy weekend, when there are exactly 2000 other functions going on. But I digress. Sean’s come a long way since the days of Hustle Simmons spearing people off stage at his shows at the Wild Hare.
The album is only going to shoot him further into the stratosphere, with my two favorite tracks being “All Your Fault” which features Ye and was produced by DJ Mano and OG Webbie. The second was “Play No Games,” which includes a dope Guy sample and sounds about as Detroit as any joint I’ve heard in a while. Like I said on Twitter, it made me want to go buy a pair of Buffys.
But before Sean got into playing the album, he showed the video above titled “Patience.” The clip was just to intro the album, and includes footage of his journey recording this album. He built a studio in his crib, so all of the footage you see of him in the lab was filmed there. Patience is everything. And Sean proves that with his career journey. It’s inspiring, so watch it above.
