Another Shitty Year For Hip Hop @ Lollapalooza

Posted on April 5, 2010 by Andrew Barber

The “official” list for Lollapalooza 2010 leaked this evening, and it’s looking pretty ass for the music I hold near and dear to my heart.  Yes, I know this isn’t a “hip hop” festival, per se, but in years passed they’ve at least had a handful of dope hip-hop acts, including Chicago talent.  Heck, I remember two years ago, there was so much dope hip-hop, I couldn’t even take in all that I wanted to see.  Lupe, Kanye, The Cool Kids, Rhymefest.  This year?  Not so much.   Slowly but surely we’re going to be wiped off the Lolla map all together.  Screw you guys, I’m going to Bonnaroo.

Maybe I’ll just skip Lolla and only the hit the parties at the Hard Rock Hotel.  It’s more fun there anyway.

Diversity is lacking. The only hip-hop acts are Cypress Hill, B.o.B. and Peanut Butter Wolf. Only a handful of artists boast Chicago pedigrees (Staples, Felix da Housecat, Flosstradamus, the Ike Reilly Assassination), though Chicago chef Graham Elliot Bowles has been enlisted to curate the festival eateries.

Here’s the list:

Soundgarden, Green Day, Lady Gaga, Arcade Fire, the Strokes, Phoenix, Social Distortion, MGMT, Jimmy Cliff, Hot Chip, the Black Keys, the National, Spoon, Devo, Cypress Hill, Cut Copy, the New Pornographers, Erykah Badu, Slightly Stoopid, Grizzly Bear, Gogol Bordello, Chromeo, Wolfmother, Yeasayer, X Japan, MUTEMATH, Metric, Dirty Projectors, AFI, Mavis Staples, Matt & Kim, the xx, Drive-By Truckers, Blues Traveler.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, the Temper Trap, Jamie Lidell, Frightened Rabbit, F Buttons, Deer Tick, Blitzen Trapper, Stars, Raphael Saadiq, the Cribs, Minus the Bear, Switchfoot, the Walkmen, Mumford & Sons, Wild Beasts, Rogue Wave, Los Amigos Invisibles, the Big Pink, the Dodos, Hockey, Cymbals Eat Guitars, B.o.B, Dawes, Warpaint, the Antlers, the Soft Pack, Rebelution, Balkan Beat Box.

Wavves, American Bang, the Ike Reilly Assassination, Company of Thieves, Nneka, Harlem, the Constellations, Miniature Tigers, Mimicking Birds, the Kissaway Trail, HEALTH, Javelin, the Morning Benders, Foxy Shazam, Violent Soho, Royal Bangs, NEON TREES, Freelance Whales, Semi Precious Weapons, Dan Black, The Band of Heathens, Dragonette, My Dear Disco, Shawn Fisher, Neon Hitch, Skybox, The Ettes, Jukebox the Ghost, These United States, MyNameIsJohnMichael.

Hip hop is dying — the mainstream is losing interest due to the lack of innovation. There hasn't been anything new in hip hop in ages, nothing to get anyone excited. Judging by what I see on here, it's not getting any better. Same old shit. Who cares? The old school locals still breathing (G4, Molemen, etc) are irrelevant and outdated. They are dinosaurs on the verge of extinction. Boring. The new cats just follow the trends. Believe me, if there was innovation coming out of Chicago, these festivals would be all over it. Chicago does not deserve to be included. Shit, hip hop does not deserve to be included.

i gotta disagree. erykah badu and raphael saddiq alone will make it worthwhile. b.o.b. is dope too. granted it won't be overflowing with hiphop this year, but the quality of representation is through the roof
