Video: AK (of Do or Die) @ VH1’s Hip Hop Honors

Posted on June 8, 2010 by Andrew Barber

Last night, James Smith J. Prince was honored amongst his southern Hip-Hop pioneer peers at the VH1 Hip-Hop Honors.  The legendary mogul and indie hip-hop catalyst was more than deserving of this award for his contributions to the game over 20 years.

Despite the show’s Southern theme, one Chicago track was thrust into the spotlight, which was arguably one of Rap-A-Lot’s biggest hits – Do or Die’s “Po Pimp”.  I must admit, I was very surprised VH1 had AK come out and perform his verse and not say, Roscoe Porter, or whatever.  I was delighted to see that, though, as Do or Die deserves that shine.

Only two tracks from the 90s were honored during the J. Prince piece, the Geto Boys “Mind Playin’ Tricks On Me” and Do or Die’s “Po Pimp”.  The other two were more recent tracks Bun’s “Get Throwed” and UTP’s “Nolia Clap”.  Interesting choices, but I’m guessing a Too Low tribute would’ve been too obscure for the big stage.  It would’ve been nice to have seen Devin up there, however.  And where was Bushwick?

Either way, props to VH1, Fab 5 and whoever chose “Po Pimp”.  But next year, the Midwest has something to say.

Props to Yardie for the vid
