BBU isn’t just beats and rhymes – there’s also a real life element to the group, where they give back and help their communities. Most recently they’ve been working in the community they live in for Takin’ it to the Streets, which is an HIV Prevention initiative, group member Epic has been orchestrating on the West Side of Chicago. Take a look at the vid and take it to the streets with BBU:
Hello again and thanks to everyone who volunteered to make Taking it to the Streets possible, a special thanks to Sughey , Jasson, Felipe, Kris, Harold, Rachel, Q4, St Alfred’s and all the other organizations and business that donated supplies and funding. I am happy to say that this will be the biggest Taking it to the Streets event yet! We have added Diabetes and Blood Pressure screening to our list of onsite services. We have the funding to provide Food and incentives to more than 100 west side residents. We have well over 15 volunteers including poets, DJs, journalist and artist that will make this Taking it to the Streets one to remember.
Why Austin?
The Austin area of Chicago is one of the most criminally marginalized, systemically disenfranchised communities in the Chicago. The issues they face around HIV, Drug addiction, Police brutality, the lack of access to equal education, employment or even something as simple as playgrounds are signs and or indicators of an oppressed people. Even a simple hiv test would already be impactful to save more lives. Our event won’t change those conditions immediately; we are basically providing a 4 hour reprieve. The Goal is to educate not only the community members about health but also allow ourselves as organizers, educators, artist, and journalist to witness the change that can happen when we come together as a people. It never ceases to amaze me the work that can be done when we come together and just help.
This reminds me of a quote by the late great Fred Hampton
“ We’ve got to face the fact that some people say you fight fire best with fire, but we say you put fire out best with water. We say you don’t fight racism with racism. We’re gonna fight racism with solidarity.” — Fred Hampton
And they make it rain condoms.
