Video: Kanye West on Today w/ Matt Lauer

Posted on November 11, 2010 by Andrew Barber

You probably remember Kanye’s rant via the Twitter a few days ago, discussing his disgust with Matt Lauer and his Today Show interview.  He was pretty butthurt.  I figured Ye was being overly dramatic, but after watching this clip I have to agree with his distaste.  It was definitely a set up.  Instead of promoting his album (which is the mission at hand here), he’s having to answer questions about Dubya and all of the fuckery surrounding his Katrina comments from 5 years ago.  At this point, who really gives a shit?   People just can’t seem to move on, and Ye will be answering questions about this incident as well as the Taylor Swift debacle for the rest of his life.  He should’ve just hit them with the *kanyeshrug* and dipped out.  I know I would have.

Gotta disagree with you on this one… From what I understand, Kanye specifically came by to discuss the Bush incident, not some pre-scheduled interview to talk about the album. (He’s scheduled to perform live on the show on the 26th). Bush’s comments this week put that issue back in the news, so it’s not exactly the media drumming up old ish. If you watch the interview, Kanye brings up Taylor Swift, not Lauer, and as any journalist worth his salt will do, he followed it up. And running background video is pretty much standard operating procedure on a morning show interview, not really a setup or a conspiracy. Bottom line is, the Today Show wouldn’t have even run that uncomfortable moment in the first place if Kanye hadn’t tweeted about it. Doesn’t diminish the fact that Kanye’s a musical genius and visionary — this is just a case of horrible media management.

Mr. West is my idol. I want to kick him the shin and talk about his under-bite. Like in a brotherly way.

i dont understand y he wouldnt just say what he wanted to say…it seemed like he was thinking to much, granted its morning news and kanye does have pressure within society george bush might not be a racist, but he doesnt care about black people and the only way he would is if he’d see some money out of it

Good journalism on Matt Lauer’s part, but that shouldn’t even be an excuse. This wasn’t just another slopped interview. They wanted an answer out of him. And the video playing in the back was nothing more than a slanted view on him (biased to the extreme). How is anyone supposed to hear his honest opinion when they’re force fed the argument at the same time? Truly condescending on NBC and the media’s part.

I agree with GR 100%. And for the record Kanye did not bring up Taylor Swift. We all know he was talking about her (amongst other shit he’s done) but if you listen to the context of what Lauer said “your eluding to when u walked out on taylor swift.” ELUDING being the key word, meaning that Lauer derived that from what Kanye was saying but Kanye before he ever actually said that.
