Mixtape: Goon Squad – Welcome To Grimmyville Vol. 1

Posted on December 30, 2010 by Andrew Barber

I was talking with Emmac and Sly Polaroid a few nights ago, and an O.G., fully shrink-wrapped copy of Welcome To Grimmyville Vol. 1, had just popped up in the studio.  It was almost like an ancient artifact had just appeared out of thin air.  We talked about how most of Bump and the Goon Squad’s classic mixtapes were very hard to find on the internet (some are on sites like DatPiff) and completely out of print everywhere else.  If you didn’t have a hard copy in the early-to-mid 00s, then you very well might’ve missed it.  This DJ Pharris-hosted project really kicked off the Goon Squad’s triumphant run to the top of Chicago’s hip-hop scene, and shed a whole new light on the City.

In the coming weeks, we’ve got a lot of new material from the good old Goon Squad gang dropping; including Bump J’s first behind bars interview, where Bump and I chat about everything you’ve wanted to know since his incarceration.  We also have a brand new Sly Polaroid street album dropping, (my man is totally back – trust that) hosted by DJ MoonDawg; along with an accompanying interview.  So yeah, some big things on deck from the Squad.  As a warmup, we thought it might be dope to post this disc that was re-discovered the other day.  If you missed it, well, now’s your chance to jump down.

You can do better than that, Welcome To Grimmyville is up on datpiff and has been for sometime I posted up back in 06 when the site was officially launching along with all bump’s other tapes grimmyville 2, gangsta grillz, word on da street etc etc. Nothin special about this copy. . .

What you should have posted was Bump’s 1st tape “Live From bedrock”

@CT how many tracks are on the Live From Bedrock tape? Mine has 11, that seems kind of light, not sure if mine is right.

@ CT, my copy also only has 11 tracks. I agree that Bumps first mixtape would’ve better but why so upset about Welcome to Grimmyville? at least he’s putting up some somewhat rare Chi stuff up that I’m sure some people have never heard before or are unable to get copies of.

@ Dre, Rare means hard to get ahold of grimmyville 1 has been on datpiff since 06. Why put it up when you able to find it? I get that this is a chicago blog but its nothing exclusive! The whole article made it seem like this tape was hard to get a hold of that it couldn’t be found anywhere else.

Drew posted a link that made me wait 1 minute before downloading. Datpiff makes you sign up and it aint easy to navigate the site. Kill that noise man. I didn’t even know this existed so pros to Drew for posting. Why you have an issue with this is beyond my understanding.

Kick rocks. The Internet Is bigger than datpiff. I had this untagged and am greatful for the higher quality, better artwork and backstory. Mad props. Thanks drew, Emmac, Drakey d etc For keeping bumps name alive!
