Cayex Illah – The 30 Shot Laws of Drama

Posted on April 12, 2011 by Andrew Barber

After well over a year of planning, recording, mixing and collecting; Cayex Illah finally unleashes his latest project: the Sean Mac-presented The 30 Shot Laws of Drama.

Cayex is an emcee and producer who I have a great amount of respect for, as this man has had his hand in some of the biggest movements in Chicago hip-hop history.  Starting off as part of the legendary crew the Illstate Assassins, Cayex worked closely and was a big part of E.C. Illa’s early career as well as the Legendary Traxster and the late great K-Tone’s D 2 Tha S.  Cayex later went on to link up with Toxic to be a part of Twista in-house production team, and a member of the Legit Ballin’ family.  Fast forward a few years, and Cayex was right alongside Bump J as part of the Goon Squad takeover .  Like I said, once you start poking around in Chicago’s history, you’ll find Cayex around damn near every corner.

Now back to do it for dolo, Cayex has rounded up 17 tracks which make up The 30 Shot Laws of Drama.  I had to ask CX where the title derived from, and he remarked: “One of my favorite books is the 48 laws of Power, so one day when I was puttin my clip in my 30 shot on my way to the studio … it hit me … THE 30 SHOT LAWS OF DRAMA …”.  So there you have it.  17 songs featuring some of that good gangsta music as well as the more introspective side of Cay.  Mick Luter, Parkay, Toxic and Goon Squad affiliates Brainz Hussla, Jay-J, Yungn all make appearances.  Cayex handled almost all of the production, but had some assistance from SC, Joe Blacula and Jahari XL on a few tracks.  This project was basically 100% Cayex, so I have to tip my hat to him for pulling it all together.

For those who know and respect Illah, you’re sure to enjoy the project, and for those who are checking out for the first time – enjoy the ride.   We also have some performance footage from Cayex’s release party that took place last Sunday in Chicago, so you can check that as well.  Nothing’s gonna stop him.
