Today we’re introducing a new series on FSD entitled The FSD Three, where we talk to an artist or producer about three of their favorite tracks ever recorded, and why each means so much to them. It’s only right that we kick things off with an artist who helped kick FSD off: Bump J. The currently-incarcerated rapper has one hell of a catalog, and possibly as many songs Pac had on lock stash. Unfortunately, many outside of Chicago never heard or witnessed Bumpy’s greatness, as he was arrested and convicted before a proper album ever hit shelves. I caught up with Bump via email from Big Springs, Texas where he is finishing out the rest of his sentence. Read the words of one of the best emcees to ever emerge from Cook County below…
Bump J “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Me” (2003). Produced by Boogz.
12 – Nothing
Well, the first on my list has to be “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Me.” Boogz did the beat and this song was a key part to me getting my deal (with Atlantic). When I would play it for record execs, they would say it gave them chill bumps. It also gave me chill bumps. The verse about all my niggas gettin’ killed or locked up was so real I damn near came to tears when I was recording it. Real heartfelt and at the time I truly meant that nothing was going to stop me. Well, we all know the Feds eventually slowed me down, but I still feel like nothing’s gonna stop me, so that’s still my favorite to this day. I recorded that song in my man Ibn’s (Ibn Jasper) house and he didn’t even have a booth. We had to turn all the music down and turn the fan off and be quiet. The mic was right next to where we was recording at and that kinda gives you the vision of my hunger at that time. Shout out to Ibn, he’s actually doing really good for himself on the road with Kanye, so he felt the same way: nothing’s gonna stop him. A lot of people still write me today and say that song inspired them.
Bump J “Our Father” (2004). Produced by Aqua.
10 – Untitled Track
The second one has to be “Our Father.” I like this song because of the message it sends. It’s that other side of the streets an artist doesn’t normally give you. The “It feels good to bring the money back home/But lord knows what I’m doing is wrong.” I’m also praying on the hook and that also let listeners know that I do believe in god and repentance. Like i said, it just shows another side that an artist usually doesn’t show. I recorded this song before I got my deal too. I was out in Cali and it might have took me all of 30-45 minutes to write. I was in talks to sign with Capitol Records, and the A&R there who’s name is 3H took me to the producer’s (Aqua) house, and I heard the beat and immediately started writing. The vocalist on the hook (Latoiya Williams) did her thing too. But overall, the song sums up what the average nigga goes through growing up in the environments we grew up in. You are basically forced to do what you have to do to survive and feed your family. Even though it might be wrong and we wish we could be doing something else, this was the hand we was dealt and we are playing it. It’s not the norm but it’s necessary to survive.
Bump J “Letter To My Competition” (2008). Produced by No I.D.
Bump J.-Letter 2 My Competition (No I.D. edit)
The third one is probably “Letter To My Competition.” I didn’t quite finish it, but I got to address a lot of haters and mini-me’s that thought I was finished because I wasn’t puttin’ out any material at the time. I was going through the split with Atlantic and Free (Maiden), and I couldn’t release anything, so this was one of the first songs I got to do to let people know I was still here and still a threat. No I.D. did the beat and this was the beginning of us recording the album we was working on to solidify a new deal and a new beginning. I got locked up not too long after I recorded it though, but it was special to me, I just wish I could’ve finished it. Plus it wasn’t structured like a normal song. I was just going bar after bar, so I really liked this one.

Whoever has ever heard Nothing’s Gonna Stop Me had to be touched by that joint….Real talk…My favorite Bump song also….Ride or Die is a very close second for me but Im not sure if thats the actual title of the song…
Dont like this mix of Letter To My Competition. It was stronger without the extra drums.
BUMP J IS ONE OF THE WACKEST RAPPERS EVER OUT OF CHICAGO!! WHY IS HE POSTED ON HERE MORE THAN ANY OF SOME OF THE DOPEST RAPPERS THAT ARE KILLING IT RIGHT NOW??!! THIS SITE IS SOME BIASED BULLSHIT. NO WONDER WHY CHICAGO WILL NEVER UNITE. FAKE ASS SHIT.. FUCK OUTTA HERE.. BUMP J..LMAO
your a fool, who’s better? butta da prince, bigg nastee, come on most of the rappers out of the chi are wack as fuck. it takes me all of 3 minuets to go through fsd everyday cuz most of the shit on here is bullshit. bump j is, hands down, one of the best 3 rappers out of chicago with twista and common rounding out the top 3. crucial is up there along with kanye (cuz he made is own style) but bump j still holds the crown even locked down.
@4th, fam I feel where you coming from but you saying Lupe don’t hold no weight as 1 of the best rappers out the Chi? If not The Best?…….
Awww man! “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Me” and “Our Father” is my fav 2 Bump tracks. “Letter 2 My Competition” I liked it and felt its significance but “That Ain’t Yo Bitch” is 3 on my list. But I listen to all 4 of these tracks on the daily! “On The Run” was that shit too and wasn’t that the last song Rick James recorded before his passing?…… Other Bump tracks that I listen to daily: Ride Or Die, Gangstas Do What They Want, Bye Bye, Catch em’ Rob em’, Gangsters & Riders, Hustlin’, Nobody Eats, Tomorrow, and Chevy Fresh Out. FREE BUMP!!!!!!
