Mixtape: Chekk Famous – Contract Killa

Posted on August 23, 2011 by Andrew Barber

Here we have a new mixtape from Chekk Famous, where he primarily goes in over new industry beats. Now, if you follow me on Twitter, I’m sure you’ve seen me rant about my disdain for rappers who rap over beats like “I’m On One,” or any other current hit. Why? Well for starters, I see almost no value in doing so. I don’t want to hear you spit a 16 over a a radio smash when your version doesn’t hold a candle to the original. Plus, if you an aspiring rapper, why aren’t you trying to build your own legacy instead of wave-riding someone elses? It seems counterproductive in a market flooded with thousands of emcees vying for a shot, to blend in instead of standing out. Crucial Conflict didn’t get their deal and eventually blow up for freestyling over “Juicy,” did they? No, they created a whole new sound, look with their own original production. There have to be producers all over the internet dying to give artists their beats for free. Sure, they may not hold up to those of Kanye West, but it’s a start in creating your own wave.

I hate to rant like this in a post for Chekk, because Chekk is a very, very dope emcee – but I wish rappers would stop wasting their time-and bars-over industry beats.
