No I.D. Named Executive Vice President Of Def Jam Records

Posted on August 29, 2011 by Andrew Barber

I’d heard this announcement was coming, so congrats to No I.D. on this power move. You can no longer use the “no Chicagoans have power in the music industry” excuse.

Says Roc 4 Life:

Here’s one that got drowned out in all the VMA chatter. No I.D. has assumed a new position as the executive Vice-President of Def Jam Records. The Roc Nation producer and Kanye mentor talked about his new role at a pre-VMA bowling mixer.

“I’m (now) executive VP of Def Jam,” the Chicago native announced. “I’m going to keep on doing what I’m doing and take it to another level.”

No I.D., fondly known as the “Godfather of Chicago hip-hop,” has crafted hits for Common (“I Used to Love H.E.R.”), Jay-Z (“D.O.A.,” “Run This Town”), Rihanna, and others. Though he hopes to keep the hits coming, his new focus is to help Def Jam find new talent.

“Def Jam is a cultural staple,” No I.D. said. “It’s not just a label, it’s part of the culture that I came up in and that I’ve been involved with for 20 years. It’s very important that the next generation of executives grab it by the horns and keep it on track as it grows.”
