Words by Hustle Simmons (@HustleSimmons)
Sure, you know Hustle Simmons as Chicago’s omnipresent concert and party host. You also know him for his colorful Twitter commentary on every subject across the board. But every March, Hustle takes his talents to Austin, TX for the South By Southwest music festival.
And this year is no different, as Simmons is hosting an astonishing four events, including his traveling showcase (which has toured nationwide) Hustlepalooza. With about 90% of Chicago’s rap community (and music community in general) making that trip down south, it’s only right that we get some advice from the Chi’s SXSW yoda. You have questions? He has answers. Hustle Solutions. Get familiar.
Hit the jump for Hustle’s 10 Keys To Surviving SXSW, and also info on all of his events. He’s no rookie at this, so learn yourself something.
10.) Don’t wear nice shoes. They will get destroyed real quick.
9.) Make sure you know what shows you really want to see and map it out daily. Making a daily schedule of events for SXSW is like chinese algebra.
8.) Cargo shorts are a must.
7.) Be prepared to collect tons of stickers, business cards, CDs, and random blunts. REAL TALK.
6.) Watch what you eat. Some of the “street meat” vendors are not good. They’ll end your trip before it begins.
5.) Have hand sanitizer and keep shaking up to a two times max per convo. There’s no reason why you and someone should shake up eight times in a three minute convo — doing the most.
4.) When you see Bun B it’s “Uncle Bun” — he’s everyone’s uncle at SXSW.
3.) Be prepared to be embraced and treated like “best friends” from people from your city, who would usually never rock with you if y’all were back in y’all hometown.
2.) You must attend the #TheLiferHouse.
1.) Enjoy it…and discover new music and DRINK as much as possible.
