Adrenaline Rush Turns 15

Posted on June 24, 2012 by Andrew Barber

15 years ago today, the world was treated to one of the greatest rap albums of all time; Twista’s Adrenaline Rush. Only 13 songs deep, the project was entirely produced by The Legendary Traxster, and was a blank canvas painted by the man who stole the show on Do or Die’s “Po Pimp” a year prior. Kids who spent hours trying to memorize T’s verse on “Po Pimp” now had a full album to sit and master. If you lived in the Midwest, then you can attest to Adrenaline Rush owning the summer of ’97.

While this wasn’t Twista’s debut (he had two prior albums, 1992’s Runnin’ Of At Da Mouth and 1994’s Resurrection), this was truly T’s coming out party. Considered by some to be a gimmicky speed rapper, Twista came back with a harder and more polished sound; kicking street tales over Traxster’s eerie instrumentals. But while the album had its fair share of war stories, Twista also successfully crafted crossover records with “Emotions” and “Get It Wet.”

In my personal opinion, Adrenaline Rush is one of hip-hop’s perfect albums. The content was well-rounded, and it ushered in a completely new and original sound, unlike anything in hip-hop at the time. Sure, Bone was thugging in harmony, but none in the group matched T’s lyrical prowess, combing high octane bars, that were clear, concise and precise. The features weren’t high profile, but had impact. No big names? None were needed. Rarely can one artist and one producer bang out a classic but AR was the exception (it was also more common at the time Missy’s Timbaland-produced album, Supa Dupa Fly, dropped the same summer).

Records like Adrenaline Rush are what’s missing in hip-hop today. The album took a chance, and it paid off. Shortly after its release a new wave of speed rappers appeared, and Traxster saw his sound mimicked and imitated. Twista carved his own lane with this album, and fans like myself would buy any project containing a Twista feature. Twista was a cult hero, and Traxster was recruited by artists across the country who wanted a piece of his Chi-Town sound.

It’s important for Chicago rap fans to remember the date: June 24, 1997. And on June 24, 2012, I urge you to revisit the album, as it’s perfect for summer days like this. Click through to take a look back at Adrenaline Rush on its 15 year anniversary. Oh, and we’re still waiting on “Overdose Pt. II.” The album stands at Gold.

Funny how time flies.
