FSD: At what moment did you realize that some (maybe most) people see you as “female MC” rather than “MC?”
Chin Chilla Meek: When they play segments strictly for girl rappers on MTV.
FSD: What do you think is the reason for only one “mainstream” woman rapper right now?
Chin Chilla Meek: Because no one has put forth the effort to knock her from her position. Period. There is no competition. People are scared to go against that empire.
FSD: Why do they have to knock her off? Isn’t there room for two (or more) in the top seat?
Chin Chilla Meek: Only if you want to split cheeks on that top seat. Haha. I mean, there wasn’t a lane for female rappers in the industry. Nicki saved that shit. And, new girl rappers are budding up. When there are enough of us to work together, maybe it’ll be different. When you find enough girls that have the TALENT. It’s coming around now, I think.
FSD: What kind of woman does it take to fill that top spot?
Chin Chilla Meek: Someone bold enough and strong enough mentally to play the game the way it needs to be played – The right way.
FSD: People often say women are “catty” and this is why they can’t work together. What do you feel about this?
Chin Chilla Meek: Yes, but its all competition at the end of the day. When I do a collab I want my verse to go harder. Again, there’s only one person who can sit on that top seat.
FSD: Do you think there’s a problem trying to go against women, when men are already creating hurdles for them and wanting to pit them against each other?
Chin Chilla Meek: I’m gonna rip a mans head off, too. Dont get it misconstrued. Everybody is competition.
FSD: That’s real. What do you feel about the word “bitch”, as used in music currently?
Chin Chilla Meek: It depends on the context, but that’s just how we talk out here. It depends on how it’s used. The way women have embraced it, the word bitch has changed to a more empowered term. I have a line “Yeah I’ma bitch a dog with no dick. Flawless.” I think it means I’m a beast. I’m a bitch about my business if I have to be.
FSD: What do you think of the current state of women rap in Chicago?
It’s new, and it’s at its beginnings. We have a lot of women rappers doing this right now. It’s not just Da Brat and Shawnna anymore. It’s starting to become main stream and on all sides of Chicago.
FSD: What do you think will be the future of women rap in Chicago?
Chin Chilla Meek: It will become more unisex. Everyone will be rocking with each other because it’ll be Chicago music period.
FSD: How do you empower/pave the way for women?
Chin Chilla Meek: That’s a great question. No one has ever asked me that. Hm… I was one of the first girls in this New Chicago movement to rap. It was me, Sasha, Lucci and Katie. We were the girls that did it first. Then other girls started doing it. Progressively, it made girls more comfortable with rapping. Instead of dancing, you are doing the artists role. That’s empowering.
FSD: What advice do you have for future rappers, especially women?
Chin Chilla Meek: Just go hard. And don’t let people’s opinions affect you. Stick to what you know and what makes you original. Don’t be a carbon copy of what you’ve seen. If you want to be recognized, give people a reason to look at you.
Constantly writing, grinding in the studio, doing shows and promoting herself, Chin Chilla Meek has jumped over enough hurdles to ride the wave of a new Chicago trend. But with undisputed lyrical talent, she has truly built the Meek empire by herself, following a new formula for women rappers completely autonomous of men. Covers of Chicago newspapers don’t seem to be where it’ll end, either, as she intends to be “an established… A WELL established artist in the game. I want to be an international icon!”
This was a great article, it is very hard for woman in the industry oppossed to males. And as she said theirs only on top spot and when you collabe you want to go harder then the others striving for the best is all you can do. And good luck to all woman rappers out there keep doing what you do and we gotta keep Chicago on top 🙂
I think there’s more than one spot. How are the more spots for the fellas? We gotta make this status quo equal, and the only way to do is is what you said – Striving for the best and putting out good material! Thanks for reading. 🙂
You know…now that I think of it, Missy is the only female rapper I can think of that doesn’t look like she’s about to strip while she’s performing. Just like women have had to fight to be taken seriously in every other industry, we’re gona have to fight for this one too mamas…
Yeah, it’s about respectability. The problem is sex sells, and sometimes people have to do what they can to get that spot and then (hopefully) champion equality in music. Functioning within double oppressions is hella hard to do!
