FSD: What is something people don’t really know about you?
Psalm One: I worked on Wall Street when I was 16 years old. I was the executive assistant to a Senior VP in a major investment firm. It was a great job but it taught me the valuable lesson that I didn’t want to work in proper corporate America.
FSD: What was the biggest payoff, or the “defining moment”, in your career as a musician?
Psalm One: I was asked to perform a paying gig at the legendary Apollo Theatre in NYC this year. It remains one of my biggest thrills not only as a musician but in life.
FSD: What do you think about the current state of Chicago Hip Hop/Music?
Psalm One: Chicago Hip Hop has always been waiting for its moment. As someone who’s been a stalwart, I’m excited and hopeful, and I say it’s about time. There are some very good and some very bad rappers here. Let us swim.
FSD: Okay, lets get to the topic at hand: How sick are you of being asked about your gender and how it has affected your music in interviews?
Psalm One: I can’t escape my gender, but it sucks that rap is so oppressive at times that women get looked at for all the wrong reasons.
FSD: Seems silly, right? No one ever asks men what their male experience has been. Why do you think that is?
Psalm One: The female experience is varied–for me it has been advantageous because I’m considered to be a dope emcee. That’s all I’ve ever wanted to be. But because of the machismo of rap the emcee sometimes gets lost. The word “femcee” is one of my least favorite words. It’s so marginalizing.
FSD: Do you hate “female rapper” as much as “femcee”?
Psalm One: Nah. I hate “femcee” more. That’s just word vomit.

One of the best articles I’ve read on FSD! Keep them coming! And Psalm One is an Amazing emcee!
Thank you, Prof. Pickle. So glad you enjoyed! Critical journalism is something I love deeply. Keep reading, ‘cuz they’ll keep coming. 🙂
Great read. I usually get bored with most music articles, but this one definitely kept my attention. Now I have some new rappers to check out! Peace
Word. Thanks for the reply, Righteous, and for reading the article! People don’t read, like REALLY read, anymore. We can all learn something new and change the way things are currently. Much love.
Great article. Great topic. Great questions and amazing person to be your first interview. Positive views and romodels are so neccesary. Especially in Chicago… Girls listen to Nicky Minaj and wanna fall in love and shake that ass ass ass ass ass. Instead of continuing education and expecting respect. Its like its easier for some to get treated as hoes bc their favorite rapper clearly calls them hoes herself. I enjoy listening to all kind of music. As long as it has great lyrics and meaning i can dig it, sadly the rappers i hear on the radio who are woman dont catch my attention much bc they sound like dudes as far as Putting woman down… Thats just dumb to me. But anywho sorry for the on and on-ness? Lol… Your article (s) catch my attention but not always able to comment! Love what you stand for and what you believe!!!!!!!
