FSD: You’ve recently released a song with New York rap legend Cormega. How did you two link up?
Onis: Man, that shit crazy! He actually was here in January for an event gathered by Louis Farrakhan. I linked up with Cormega through his homie Milk. So Cormega went to the Farrakhan event, and after he slid through the studio. He definitely embraced taking on the song, and it didn’t even take him that much to complete the song. I already had some bars to it. He heard the track and asked, “So what you want me to do?” I was like, “Man shit whatever!” He vibed out for a minute and came up with the hook.
FSD: We’ve recently featured you in our 14 Chicago Projects We’re Anticipating. How did you feel about that?
Onis: It was definitely an honor; I didn’t expect that at all. It’s good to see people messing with my work. It definitely blew me back away for a second, but it let me know to go harder. The Time Is Now project is definitely going to be dope. It’s definitely my best project up to date. It’s only going to get better.
FSD: Speaking of The Time Is Now project, can you let the readers know who you are working with on the mixtape?
Onis: Yeah, I have BJ The Chicago Kid on the tape. BJ like fam, he knocked that out with no problem. The way he did it was kind of crazy though, but that’s another story. [Laughs.] The Cormega joint will definitely be on there. It’s probably going to be like 12 to 13 joints on there.
I got The Boy Illinois on there. I got my boy Phil G on a song called “Down”. Last but not least, I got the homie Ras Kass. Soul On Ice is one of my favorite albums, so it was definitely a blessing to work with him. DJ Burn One is going to host the project. It’s a good mixtape though — it’s definitely worth hearing, man!
