Over the course of the next month, FSD will be bringing you exclusive content from VH1’s new hit series, SMIRNOFF’s Master of The Mix. The show pits the top DJs from around the country against each other to find out exactly who is the master of the mix. The DJs will perform in packed clubs in cities across the country in front of an esteemed panel of judges including Mia Moretti, Kid Capri and Ben Maddahi.
Fake Shore Drive will be bringing you weekly recaps of SMIRNOFF’s MOTM episodes, as well as exclusive playlists, interviews and content from the program. We’ve also been paired with a DJ from the MOTM, with FSD repping the work of DJ Dynamix. Hit the jump for a review of episode five and an interview with Dynamix.
Master of the Mix airs every Monday at 11PM CST/12AM EST on VH1
Last night, the remaining DJs headed down to Miami to to soak in the sounds of South Beach. Guest judge, DJ Irie, joined the panel to see if any of the DJs had what it takes to rock the club 305 style. Unfortunately, Chicago’s own DJ Dimepiece was eliminated from the program, but gave a solid effort on her way out of the door.
The undisputed champ last night, however, was Chris Karns, who despite his uncertainties, rocked the spot with a set including sounds from Trick Daddy, JT Money and more. Our guy, DJ Dynamix gave an inspired set, and will live to mix another week. We caught up with Dynamix to talk about the program, his influences and who he sees as his biggest competitor.
FSD: When and where did you begin DJing?
DJ Dynamix: I started out making mixes with 2 tape players when I was 13, then got my turntables and started doing house parties a year later in 1999.
FSD: What was your first big break as a DJ?
DJ Dynamix: I got casted to do a commercial for State Farm Insurance a year after I started DJing. I went through the casting process lugging my equipment every time and showcased what I could do. In the end, they chose me over experienced actors.
FSD: What’s been your favorite gig since you’ve been in the game?
DJ Dynamix: I used to DJ for a hip-hop group called “Live Radio”, which consisted of 2 emcees: Laidlaw & Juggaknot, Overlord who played the beats live on his MPC, & I laid down the scratch choruses. For our very first show, we opened up for Jaylib at the El Rey Theater. At the last minute, they gave me a 15-min opening slot to DJ before the show. That 15 turned into 45 and I got the whole crowd to sing along to the songs I played. Tre from The Pharcyde even made a surprise appearance and we performed “Runnin” together. Then I introduced my crew and we shut the place down. Seeing everyone cheer and show so much love was one of the best moments in my DJ career. I’m also grateful I got to share the stage with J Dilla before he passed.
FSD: Who are your favorite new artists to spin in the club?
DJ Dynamix: I think Tyga is putting out a lot of heat. His songs get great crowd reaction. Kendrick Lamar is killing it right now too. I’m glad that an artist like Kendrick is getting so much attention right now. He puts out a lot of quality material. I’m definitely playing at least 2 Kendrick joints in my set. Plus I gotta support my West Coast artists.
