Something that’s been lost in translation in hip-hop over the years is the art of the duo. Think about it; two piece sets like Outkast, UGK, Tha Dogg Pound, Mobb Deep and Eightball & MJG have made some of the best music known to the genre in its 30 year span. Groups are a undoubtedly a dying breed, but nowadays, duos are even more rare.
Enter the week six competition, where each remaining DJ was paired with another to form a DJ duo. And the stakes were high, as one of the duos was to be eliminated. As in both members. So yeah, a lot was on the line with last night’s episode. Chris Karns, the winner of week five’s challenge, had a leg up on the competition and was able to not only select his own partner (a huge advantage), but pair up the other duos as well.
The groups were as follows: Chris Karns and Jayceeoh, DJ Loczi and Incrediboi, DJ Tina T and Brian Dawe, and our guy DJ Dynamix was paired with Miami native Fly Guy. The guests judges for week six were the world renowned brother DJ duo, the EC Twins; and the challenge was to wow the crowd with a killer EDM mix.
Dynamix and Fly Guy had a killer set. It was a perfect blend of old and new school EDM records, that included a great selection of song choices. They addressed the crowd (very important), and were having fun with their set. Tina and Brian had a very theatrical set, that came across as kinda cheesy, but fun. They didn’t do much mixing, but did manage to get the crowd (and judges) on their feet.
But it was Chris Karns and Jayceeoh who rose to the occasion with an insane set, with hip-hop inspired mixes. The judges concluded it was one of the best EDM sets they’d seen in a long time, and was even better than stuff they’d heard at Coachella and Ultra Music. DJ Loczi and Incrediboi weren’t far behind, and offered up a similar set that resonated with the judges, the twins and the crowd.
In the end, it was Chris Karns and Jayceeoh and Incrediboi and Loczi who came out victorious and tied for first place, and were safe from being sent home. Our homie Dynamix and Fly Guy didn’t fare as well, but were able to escape elimination. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said for Tina and Brian, who got the axe for their somewhat cheesy set. I will say, however, that each duo brought their A game, and no one really failed. But hey, it’s a competition, so someone had to go home.
Looking forward to all the recaps… I never miss an episode of Master of the Mix, even watch all the replays…
