Is this something that you really want or you feel like you have to do?
Without a doubt, I want to continue to have good balance. It’s almost something I feel like I have to do. I like music so much and my parents are super parents so they’ll never let me drop out. I’m cool with the balance.
So your parents have always been behind you with rapping from the start?
They’ve always been supportive. Well, the thing is, my Pops used to work in the White House. Not sure if anyone really knows this, but my dad has worked with Obama and has been a big politician in Chicago. He’s helped change a lot of things and my mom works for the attorney general so she’s done a lot in the city, too. From that background alone, the immediate thing was that they wanted us to be politicians. They wanted us to go to college and give back to the community.
The best thing about parents is when they realize that they can’t make decisions for who you want to be. My Dad always tells me that once I’m 18, my decisions will be based off what I learned and what I want to do with my life. It’s all about learning experiences in life and that’s why I have super parents because they let me learn.
What advice would you have for someone your age?
Rappers and non-rappers, just do what you love to do. If you love it then you’ll always work hard at it and you’ll make it. Don’t do it unless it makes you happy because there’s no point if you’re unhappy.
I’m so elated with this article. Fantastic interview! I learned so much about the artist, Taylor Bennett, through the interview! Just outstanding!
