FSD: As producers, how do you feel about listening to a song for the first time on computer speakers? Does it do the song justice, or is it better to hear it somewhere else to enjoy it for the first time?
Nez: I definitely prefer to hear it somewhere outside of the laptop speakers. It could be in the car, a party, or somewhere else because the laptop speakers don’t give you the full quality effect of the beat. Even headphones are better.
Rio: Honestly, I think trash is trash. [laughs] I totally agree with Nez about listening to it in the car, but if it’s super weak on the computer chances are it’ll be wack as hell wherever you play it. [laughs] I’m not totally against laptops on first listen, but to agree with Nez ,try headphones or ear buds.
FSD: Are you two looking to team up with any other producers on certain things?
Nez: Yeah when we got out here at first we worked with The Underdogs a little bit. We haven’t been working with too many other producers, thoug. Shit it’s already two of us. [laughs]
FSD: Are you leaning towards R&B a bit more these days?
Rio: Yeah it’s funny because we’re known as “hip-hop producers,” which is cool because that’s what most people have heard from us. But Nez and I are a lot more versatile with music. I feel like that’s one of our strengths as producers to be able to work with so many different types of artists. We just haven’t had the opportunity or time to make it happen yet, but we will branch off into other genres. Time will tell.
FSD: What other genres besides R&B and Hip-Hop would you aim for?
Nez: We don’t have any really limitations so if we like it, we’ll make it pop music or whatever.
Rio: If I could make a hot country song, I’m with it. [laughs] No genre classification is going to hold me back from making something I think is fresh.
FSD: What’s next for Nez and Rio?
Nez: Mainly, we’re working on our project which is set to be release next year. More TDE stuff. More Save Money and some R&B stuff. Lots of surprises, too.
FSD: Anything else you’d like to add?
Nez: Yep, go buy Oxymoron when it comes out.
Rio: Go buy three copies. Tell mom, dad, cousin and grandma to get it. I want people in Chicago to know that this is part of the reason why we came out here, to you know, cross that threshold. From being producers to professional producers, so please support the wave.
Great! Love the article!
Shout out Nez & Rio this beat is so stupido. Ever since I heard that out of King L’s mouth I did everything to catch up on these beatsmiths. Their tracks stand out and the shine is well deserved. Great read by the author.
