FSD Feature: 100 Great Chicago Rap Songs Of 2013

Posted on December 17, 2013 by FSD Staff

ZMoney “Regular”

“Regular” is all about relativity. Your boyfriend for example, is no competitor, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s a nobody—he’s just regular in comparison. Similar to the lyric game played in “UOENO,” Z took a concept and ran with it for the whole song. People outside of Chicago might have heard ZMoney for the first time when Chance The Rapper came out with a strange, animated promotional video for Acid Rap. The song in the background, however, was not a Chance song, it was Z’s Auto-tune masterpiece, “Want My Money.” Since then, Z released the Elevator-directed monster, “Regular,” which may have been one of the first rap videos to feature a band-aided rapper since the Nelly chart stranglehold.

Back in July, Z dropped not one, but two mixtapes out of nowhere. Almost every track is a potential single, but “Regular” still stands out as the canonical Z song. He fits nicely into today’s conversation surrounding nearly “incoherent” rap, for which what is actually being said can take a backseat to its delivery. Z toes that line more than certain other rappers, but it’s clear that his voice is nothing regular in today’s rap climate. Let Z’s two excellent tapes hold you over until he randomly decides to drop four albums on some Wednesday afternoon or something.

Yeah, I get what you’re trying to do here – it’s incredibly comprehensive – but how about 10-20 I actually have time to work through
