FSD Feature: 100 Great Chicago Rap Songs Of 2013

Posted on December 17, 2013 by FSD Staff

Sicko Mobb “Fiesta”

The difference between bopping and it’s forebearers in footwork and the California born jerking is that bopping is inviting. You see a couple kids in a music video doing the big, goofy leg swooping motions and think “I could do that” and then you hear the hypnotically catchy music and the Holy Ghost compels you to give it a shot. Although current bop kings Lil’ Kemo and Dlow have injected the mechanics with elements of footwork and jerking that take considerable skill to pull off, the basics are no more difficult than the original Chicago dance sensation the “Cha Cha Slide.”

Lil Trav and Lil Ceno, collectively known as Sicko Mobb, came roaring out of the underground as the hottest names on the street to be associated with bop. They went from total unknowns to flexing $3 million dollar label offers in a few months. Imagine their premiere single, “Fiesta,” as the product of local superstars that are way more into Pixie Sticks than cocaine. It may seem dumbfoundingly simple at first but therein lies the brilliance. Every element that could get in the way of the hook has been sheared away, all that remains is a one finger synth line, some chest thumping footwork snares, and a dizzying flurry of hooks and auto-tuned verses that bleed right into the chorus. The way Trav and Ceno wrap their accents around every vowel (“Bawl like Houston R-aww-kets”) ensure you’ll be singing along in your head all week, whether you like it or not.

Yeah, I get what you’re trying to do here – it’s incredibly comprehensive – but how about 10-20 I actually have time to work through
