FSD: How much did “Dance” officially sell as a single?
Soundmaster T: It sold over 500,000 copies by 1996, and it’s probably a lot more by now.
FSD: How did you manage to stay strong on the independent music scene for 20 years?
Soundmaster T: My 20 years of success in the game comes from prayer and hard work. I work with almost everybody in the city. In 2000, I had the whole city screaming “Yahh Yahh” with my group The Mercenaries. In 2008, I had three top 10 local hits on Chicago radio stations WGCI, Power 92 & B96.
FSD: What projects are you currently working on?
Soundmaster T: I’ve been very busy in my recording studio, producing beats and recording mixing and mastering for half of the artists in Chicago. But I’m bout to go in on some new Soundmaster T bangers.
FSD: Finally, what advice would you give to any up and coming artist who scores a big hit?
Soundmaster T: I learned a lot, My advice to new artists with a hit is: handle your own money and don’t trust anybody! Not even family members. Stay prayerful, stay humble and don’t ever stop going hard!
