A very nice new video courtesy of Jahzel, which is dedicated to the city he loves and calls home: Chicago. He’s “Faithful” to his hometown and the good and bad that comes with it. His story goes quite a bit deeper so I’ll let him elaborate:
Born and raised as a Jehovah’s Witness in Chicago’s Northside, Jahzel’s experienced adversity his entire life with the juxtaposition of his sheltered home life and the tough street life outside his front door. In ministry school he was considered too hood, in the hood he was too “white” because of the way he was raised. However, growing up in Chicago, with its fragile imperfections and strong blue-collar work ethic, trained Jahzel to expect challenges and to work hard. “Adversity is what molds me,” says Jahzel. As a man full of juxtapositions that relate to religion, street life, race, class, and being the son of first generation Nigerian immigrants, Jahzel’s complex experience of growing up in an often-misunderstood city is put on display in his sophomore album, The Wake Up.
The Wake Up drops on 1/19/15.
