In November of 2014, it was announced that Waukegan-native, J.R. Donato had just inked a deal with Wiz Khalifa’s fledging label, Taylor Gang. It was not only a big deal for J.R., but for the local scene as a whole, since Wiz is one of the most popular and influential artists in all of music.
But many wondered how this local artist was able to catch the ear of the Taylor Gang boss, and cut through the thousands of other rappers vying for a shot in the big leagues. Well, today we caught up with Mr. Donato, to talk about his Taylor Gang affiliation, how he hooked up with Wiz, and what plans he has slated for 2015. The future is looking type bright for J.R., so find out how he plans to conquer below.
FSD: First and foremost congrats on the deal with Taylor Gang. How did you hook up with them?
J.R.: I hooked up with Taylor Gang through My Manager, Jah Spice. He’s known Wiz for years. My dad who’s a huge support system for me and my music, met Jah in Atlanta, (which is my 2nd home) and let him listen to some of my music. Jah had told Wiz about me, so Wiz had me come backstage at the first Under The Influence Of Music Tour.
Besides me tweeting the Taylor Gang members my music they hadn’t really seen or heard of me. We chilled for a minute and before I dipped, I told Wiz I was honored to meet him and how big of an inspiration he is for me and my music. I remember him telling me, “Don’t worry about anything, you here because you’re supposed to be.” Like the shit was meant –I’ll never forget that. Sledgren gave me some beats that night and we went from there. I didn’t stay on the tour but he had me fly out to LA later and that’s when he threw me on Cabin Fever 2. It’s been different ever since.
FSD: There’s literally thousands and thousands of rappers. How was he able to pick you out of the pack?
J.R.: I think it just happened organically because I was meant to meet Wiz. He’s been a huge mentor in my life since the first day we’ve met. He showed me so many different sides to this business/rap game that I’m becoming a part of. He has always treated me like family and a like little brother. I think I’ve always showed him I was hungry, creative and could bring something different to the table. To answer the question God works in mysterious ways and the day Wiz met me he took me under his wing. Some would say he found me.
FSD: So are you signed to Taylor Gang directly, or through a major label / Taylor Gang?
J.R.: Taylor Gang directly.
FSD: When can we expect your debut album?
J.R.: I’m going to drop a couple mixtapes before I get into my album. Sooner than later though.
