Yesterday was Sunday, so it was only right to have Chance The Rapper close out Pitchfork Music Festival. And of course it was only fitting to perform “Sunday Candy” in a major way. So big, in fact, that Chance got one of biggest gospel musicians on the planet to offer up some help: Kirk Franklin.
Yes, Chance’s surprise guest was none other than the man behind “Stomp.” Rumors swirled all weekend that Kanye West was to be the surprise guest, but that would’ve been too obvious. Chance doesn’t do anything by the book, so why would he be so predictable on such a massive stage? He always has a curveball on deck.
Kirk emerged from backstage to run through a couple of his hits before joining Chano and the choir for a glorious and vibrant rendition of his hit “Sunday Candy.” The vocalist on the track, Jamila Woods, was a true breakout star last night — she showed and proved and blew the crowd away with her powerful voice which cut through the crowd like a knife.
Re-watching this gave me chills. It was an amazing ending to an amazing weekend. Sunday school was real last night. Watch in amazement up top.
