FSD: Speaking of your Open World Films Company, tell us about the studio you are opening up?
Gates: It’s going to be a full-blown studio. It’s not going to be limited to just myself and my staff. It’s going to be available to aspiring directors, students, and photographers. It’s 11,000 square feet. I just got done talking to the architect. I’m just trying to bring a piece of Hollywood to Chicago. I also want to give a lot of resources that new directors might not be able to get on their own–for example insurance and permits.
FSD: What else can the students experience at your studio?
Gates: We were thinking about teaching some film and editing classes. Right now our main focus is to just rent the spot out.
FSD: What’s next for you?
Gates: Movies! [Laughs.] I think every director that starts off in videos wants to grow up and graduate eventually to the next level. Anybody can see within my body of work that I add a cinematic value, whether it’s a big budget or low funding video.
