Say it ain’t so. In 2012 we saw local stars flourish into YouTube sensations which transcended into major label deals. The music was infectious, but was it all a dexterous marketing scheme orchestrated by Chicago’s finest visionaries? Speculations surfaced in early 2012 when popular Chicago director, D.Gainz , saw his YouTube channel hit 100k plus per video.
When asked about the fraudulent views rumors, he stated “It’s kinda stupid to me. I mean, if I could pay for views, I’d have a million views on every one of my videos. I got some videos on my page that only have 100 views. Some videos stuck at 3,000 that people don’t watch. Every video don’t got 400,000 views.”
Yeah, we’ve all received the emails from bogus internet shysters, promising us thousands of fake YouTube views for the low, low price of $10; but these frauds weren’t at play here. The views were further evidence that the younger generation consumes music very differently than their older counterparts. Screw buying it, they ‘d rather stream it for free on YouTube. Gainz, Zae and the other rising directors also had the ingenius idea to not release the Mp3, forcing fans to play the video over and over and over. It was probably an accident, but it worked to their advantage. Plus the videos were hot.
