Collaboration
Collaboration, not in the sense of features, a’la any DJ Khaled album, but as in who Kanye invites to the studio to evolve his vision. One thing about Kanye’s music career that doesn’t get enough credit is his willingness to bring in talented artists to make the best album possible. It’s something he’s done since Late Registration when former Fiona Apple producer Jon Brion helped bring Kanye’s vision to life.Graduation saw DJ Toomp provide Kanye with a refined southern sound on “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” and on the somber and reflective “Big Brother.”
Artists aren’t always brought in to add their vocals or their name to a project, however, as evidenced on 808s & Heartbreak, when Kanye recruited a little-known artist named Kid Cudi to help write the melodies of Kanye’s moodiest project to date. Consequence, Malik Yusef, GLC, Really Doe and many others have all provided their talented pens to Kanye West tracks. On My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy Pusha T joined Kanye’s studio clique to craft a masterpiece of an album.
This great feature by Complex’s EIC Noah Callahan-Bever provides better insight into Ye’s album making process. Whether it’s in Chicago, New York, Hawaii or Paris, talented people are sure to follow when Kanye is making an album.
