Sound
When people lament and complain on social networks over Kanye’s evolution as an artist I can’t help but laugh. Kanye is no longer the College Dropout providing soul sampled beats to every east coast rapper. But his talent of blending traditional hip-hop with contemporary sounds is alive and more present than ever. Since Graduation Kanye’s albums have always had a “stadium status” quality to them.
Whether it’s the orchestral strings on Late Registration, the synths on Graduation or the combination of all those elements and more on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye has strived to make his albums push the boundaries of what a hip-hop is supposed to sound like. Another thing to point out is how Kanye doesn’t ignore what is currently popular in hip-hop (or music in general). But instead of jackin’ a particular popular sound he incorporates it into his way of life — his vision. He did it with auto-tune on 808s and with several dubstep and EDM inspired rhythms on Watch The Throne.
One comment that sticks about what Kanye’s next album will sound like comes from Jeff Rosenthal of ItsTheReal when discussing Travis Scott’s “Quintana”: “Guaranteed this is what Kanye’s next album sounds like. Actually, this is what Kanye’s last three albums have sounded like, squashed flat into one song. Either way, perfect.”
I wouldn’t doubt the album will have a similar sound and it will be interesting to hear how he blends it with whatever he is currently inspired by (possibly the latest Chicago sound?)
