6. YP – Wide Awake
[Download]
Years after Your Problem first told us No Sleep was the motto, he’s still keeping up with his cousin of death mantra. Over the past year or so, some of YP’s best work has been alongside producer C-Sick, so for Wide Awake, he and C went in and banged out a slew of joints, most notably “Rub-A-Dub” featuring King Louie, which landed in heavy rotation on MTV Jams. C and YP found a groove on Wide Awake that was a welcomed new direction for each other’s sound.
YP rounded out the project with beats from DJ L, Chase Davis, Snapback and Nascent. More so than most artists, YP is great at trend-spotting and getting with dope MCs and producers before the masses catch on. He’s a bit of a rapping A&R. YP constantly keeps his ears to the street, making sure his sound is always one step ahead – and that’s one of the reasons he’s seen so much success.
