FSD: SaveMoney now, you guys are an international group, not even just the US anymore. With that being said, and with those expectations, how has that made you hungrier?
Dally Auston: I ain’t eating! So there isn’t any expectation. I think it’s cool that I can get tweets from people all around the world, but that’s one part. That’s my drive man, making music for them. I thought I was doing it for myself, I thought I was doing it financially but, I feel like it’s a void I have to fulfill now. It’s people hitting me up for music. Emailing me, don’t want no feature, don’t want nothing but telling me how they feel about my music. So, I got a whole view of what I’ve been doing not only for myself, but for other people and I think it’s cool.
FSD: So fans. You got fans is what you’re saying.
Dally Auston: They family now. They’re not fans they’re family because when you can get personal with me and you don’t know me, it’s a different feeling.
FSD: Since the Westside EP topped off the year, it’s been a pretty good year for you it seems. How’ve you been since the Westside EP? How has that changed what you’ve been doing, what you’ve been working on, who’ve you been working with? Any new doors, or eyes to Dally?
Dally Auston: After the Westside, it was [SXSW] so I’ve lowkey been chilling, just trying to capitalize on the Westside EP. Any other doors opening? Of course. Rather than people perceiving what Dally has, I’m just trying to get myself together so when it’s time to really show what I got, I’m ready. It’s definitely turn up time, but it’s kind of early to say. Right now, I’m just really working.
FSD: How has music, as well as just life as an artist and image Dally Auston, changed you as a person and your mentality toward life, music, the arts, and living?
Dally Auston: It’s kind of crazy that we’re talking about this because we were just talking about it yesterday. I’ve been calling myself Dally since high school, so I feel like I changed my name a long time ago. But I don’t know, it’s about staying true. We were talking about filling the blank. If honesty isn’t the best policy, what is?
We were talking about empathy and shit like that. I just think it’s being honest with yourself, and just carrying yourself the way that you really feel. A lot of people try to be something that they’re not. It’s easier to say that, but I’m just trying to stay true to myself and just let it be that. People do bad things and it’s on your conscience, I just try to be truthful to shit. I don’t know, I can’t really tell the kind of person I am, so I just say I try to be truthful.
FSD: What do you mean you can’t really tell?
Dally Auston: You can’t really say! That’s a hard question. People always tell you something different about yourself, you know. So I always kind of feel like I’m… I don’t know. That’s a different kind of question. I’m sorry I can’t answer.
FSD: Okay, that some food for thought, I guess.
Dally Auston: Being an artist, and being a regular person, is I don’t know. I don’t know if I’m balancing it really well.
FSD: That was actually my next question. How do you feel about the separation between being you, and being an artist? Are you trying to separate them, do you feel like you need to separate them?
Dally Auston: I was probably trying to be too deep with the whole truthful thing. Yeah I think it’s that. I know I’m Denzel Auston Lundy, and I’m still Dally. I never try to divide the two. I guess that’s really my answer, I try to be the same. When I’m on stage I have to have a different type of energy but I mean if you ever see me, I’m damn near that. My music is chill, but I’m trying to bring my everyday energy to the stage.

sweet interview from the journalist and dally
Great interview. I like that it was very in depth and didn’t have the regular “easy” interview questions. It challenged the artist to provide thoughtful answers by digging deeper. Would love to see more interviews like this!
