FSD: I know with the three of them they’ve had on and off relationships.
SD: I stay out of that because it ain’t got nothing to do with me. I’m not finna sit and pick sides. Let y’all do what you’re finna do it ain’t got shit to do with me.
FSD: But you do have some interesting collaborators you’ve worked with like Riff Raff and Danny Brown.
SD: I love doing music and the genuine relationship versus “This song will get me to here or this song will probably get me on the radio and this song will get me in the club”. I ain’t really into that because I don’t really make club music. I make my own style and I feel like that’s what my fans want to see. They want to see where [my] creative at.
FSD: You’re sometimes referred to as one of Chicago’s most underrated but with Truly Blessed people seem to be catching onto SD. Do you feel like you’re underrated?
SD: See, this is why people say the “low-key” and that. It ain’t the fact that I’m low-key, I’m everywhere, I’m never in Chicago. We started rockin’, its been three years now, the first year I did shows like social shows but the last three years I’ve been doing just SD shows. Me, moving around, getting everywhere and not putting myself in a position to be in business with shit that ain’t got nothing to do with me. That’s what the world right now feeds off of. “Who into it and who fightin’ and who arguing.” The drama.
FSD: So you don’t really have those antics.
SD: Exactly. I’mma get money and chill. I love to have fun, I like to kick it. I don’t fuck with police so I mind my business. That’s why I’m barely in Chicago, I just come and visit.
FSD: Have you done any international shows?
SD: I did a couple shows in Canada. I ain’t going to lie, Canada showed hella love. Crazy. I did like two or three shows in Toronto then I did another show in Montreal.
FSD: Do you have a following up there?
SD: Yeah, that’s why I was saying Canada shows love. That’s another thing, I don’t do a lot of such thing because it’s always me working for myself even when I was with the whole GBE movement it was still SD doing what he doing. It was more me in my lane. Like, I literally stand on my own.
FSD: Truly Blessed was a totally SD affair, no guest spots. Is this how you want to do your full lengths from here or was this a one off?
SD: I’m not going to say that’s basically what I want to do. I figure, if I gotta get something done I’m going to get it done, regardless if I need a feature to do it. If I can’t get it I’m not going to push the issue. I ain’t the type of person to be stuck on my pride, I got people I’m responsible for. I got fans, I got people that are actually dedicated to my music that rely on my words.
FSD: Did you try to get guests on the album?
SD: No. I’m more like an artist that likes doing features off the genuine relationship. I don’t want a feature just for the name.
FSD: In 2012 when everyone was getting signed, who was the biggest label you talked to?
SD: Man… we had dinner with every label in the industry. Back then it was more like a movement, like a group, we all going to go somewhere together. It wasn’t like “you get signed to them and you get signed to them”, it was more like we all going to go somewhere together.
FSD: That’s not what happened though.
SD: You plan a lot of things that will never go the right way.
FSD: Do you have the next single from Truly Blessed picked out?
SD: I ain’t going to lie to you. My fans got a rude awakening right now. There’s more to come than Truly Blessed.
