FSD: I can like hear this been like a song that Main Attractionz would rap over.
SKY: Right. That’s why – I mean, yeah, I like that whole cloud track shit that they started, you know what I’m saying? But this is the shit I actually like to listen to. Like if it’s just me, just chilling. If we’re going out to party and I put that on in the car, I feel like everyone would be like, you know, “Turn this shit the fuck off, man”.
FSD: Is there anyone in Detroit right now that you like want to put on like anyone that is kind of been slept on out here?
SKY: Yeah, man. Dream Beats, Jonah Baseball, Black Noise, OG Tax, Little Skinny. May Tracks – he like a secret person nobody knows. I mean that’s like seven. I guess that’s a decent number of people, but all them people is lit. I feel like there’s got to gotta be someone else that I’m just forgetting, that’s crazy. I don’t know I just stick with those seven. But yeah, you should check all of them out.
FSD: How many beats did you do for Atrocity Exhibition?
SKY: The stuff I had actually ended up getting cut in the final processes of the album. Basically, it’s executively produced by Paul White.
FSD: Okay, that’s interesting. So you actually didn’t play a part in the final product, then?
SKY: Nah, nah. We made a song, but as the album started coming together, Paul White’s production really just set a vibe and the shit I did was still kind of trip-electric and it’ll come out, but it just didn’t sit well with the vibe I feel like [and] the tone of the Paul White shit. The album is almost a movie now, and my songs didn’t fit the movie.
FSD: Could you tell me a little bit about the album? How is it different from the prior projects he’s put out?
SKY: I mean, all I can say is it doesn’t sound like anything I’ve heard before. Like I said, Paul White is a genius and his beats are crazy. It really feels like you’re watching a thriller. It’s really amazing. Danny going crazy. I guess the main thing I’m saying is it honestly feels like a movie when you’re watching it. Its parts that’s scary, its parts that’s funny but it’s very cinematic.
FSD: To transition back to you, I talked to you back in January. Since that time over the past eight months, has there been any records that have come out that you’ve listened to on rotation?
SKY: In general, or you mean like Danny?
FSD: No, in general. Like anyone you’ve been listening to personally.
SKY: I’m kinda biased right now, but Schoolboy Q was just here and I had just went out to the show. Watching his live set just made me get back into Black Face. And Blank, that whole album is crazy. I secretly love the 21 Savage Metro mixtape or album, whatever you wanna call it. Like, I run everyday and that’s what I run to. But other than that, we’ve just been working on this live show for this upcoming tour. So, I don’t know. I’ve just kinda been in a box. But I haven’t really been like seeking new music to be honest with you.
FSD: So you are going out with Danny on his next tour?
SKY: Yeah, yeah. We’re going to be gone for a long time.
FSD: Cool. Do you guys have anything cool cooked up for this show? Danny always puts on an awesome show, so is there anything different?
SKY: Yeah, the final shit is still being put together, but yeah, you’re trying to have a little bit more than just a DJ and a microphone. We’re trying to do some cool shit. I don’t wanna go too far into it because I don’t know what shit could fall through by the time the tour comes, but it’s talked about. Just more of an entertaining live show. Doing more and more every time.
FSD: What are you favorite beats or songs that you’ve made overall?
SKY: I mean on XXX, 30. The last song on it that me and Danny did. That’s like my favorite song that I ever had anything to do with.
FSD: I love that song. That song – I think – is the centerpiece of that album. It’s a great album but without that song…
SKY: Yeah, I still get goosebumps when I listen to that shit to be honest with you. We had one song that was going to be on Atrocity Exhibition that’s fucking sweet as fuck, and it’ll come out but like I said, it just didn’t fit. I feel like the sounds of the beats I was giving him were kinda more like live foreign dip, like more electric. Yeah, this shit is crazy. So you heard the first single?
FSD: Yeah.
SKY: Yeah, so you know. We made one song, it’s called ‘Kool-Aid’ and that shit is amazing.
FSD: And you think you will drop it at some point, like on Soundcloud or something?
SKY: Yeah yeah, it’ll come out. Like slowly but surely, I want to have some kind of album release with the rappers I’ve done songs with. I got some shit on my computer that I just never put out [and] I’ve been holding onto. And that just might be a song that goes onto, you know, a SKYWLKR album.
FSD: So you just put out a mixtape Joints. What was your thought process putting that together?
SKY: It was honestly nothing. Like, to be 100 percent honest with you. I make beats everyday, I go to the studio all the time but it was like one morning, I got high and it was like a spontaneous thing. I was like, “Fuck keeping beats on my hard drive”. I just made a little website, and put in on Mediafire, whatever. It was completely spontaneous. I did the artwork on my iPhone in like 10 minutes. It was nothing too serious. I just did it for fun.
The last song, I put Dopehead on who we’re about to bring on tour. And it was just a cool way to put a song out with him, and just put some shit out ‘cause I don’t want to get too caught up in making rap beats. It’s still a lot of cool producer kids I’ve met from making beats, so I just feel like I gotta put shit out. I can’t just wait for a rapper to get on a song. I still do just the instrumental shit.
FSD: So outside of the tour, is there anything else that you’re working on right now or is that your focus?
SKY: Shit, Danny is already working on the next shit. We’re working on music all the time. We got a little circle of us – Dopehead, Zelooperz, Danny – and everyone is constantly getting every beat [and] everyone is trying things out. Like, we literally have so much material done. Danny is really just a perfectionist and he’s patient and drops shit at the right time. But we literally have so many songs. Like, I’m not even kidding. Like 65 songs or something that Danny’s on, and then like 40 other ones that the homies are on. We’re all just working with each other on each other’s projects. And like my best friend, we all make beats together and we got a 21 Savage placement. Just tryna do cool shit, and eventually do some shows and shit. But I’m worrying about Danny, the homies, my friends and working on all those projects. And on this upcoming tour, I’m gonna try and make a beat tape while on the road with the headphones on and shit.
FSD: Is there anything else that you want to say or talk about, anything else you want to, do you have any like hobbies or anything else you do outside of like music that?
SKY: Let me think, I got a 5-year old dog in the backyard that is lit as fuck. Her name is Pumpkin. When I was in high school, I was strangely good at tennis. I played number 1 singles, like I did it for my mom. Like, mom is obsessed with tennis and I could beat anybody in tennis I think, possibly even on a Padel Tennis Court. I was a guitar hero, like I beat Dragonforce and all that shit. Other than that, I’m pretty normal.
