How do you supplement your career as a musician?
I used to work so many fuck jobs before I ultimately quit working all together. I held a lot of bus boy, food runner and waiting positions at various restaurants around Chicago. I’m an audio engineer these days, only taking sessions when I truly need some money, and I’m not the type that needs much to get by.
Do you have a side-hustle?
I suppose audio engineering is my side hustle as I focus ALL of my energy into mixing, producing and making “Hurt Everybody” and my solo work do what it’s supposed to do. I do a couple other things from time to time to gather quick funds but I’m not able to speak freely on such matters at this time.
What is your biggest obstacle as an artist trying to make it in a busy industry?
It’s honestly getting past peoples ego’s and bravado, and fostering an actual relationship not wrangled together by terms like “networking” and “Ladder climbing” being in the back of peoples minds. It’s not as difficult in Chicago as it used to be to go out and meet those involved with the hip hop industry and movement at parties, shows and events, but the ever apparent “I already assume I’m better than you” factor along with the fact that they probably dealt with a wave of talkative fans and others looking for opportunity only adds to the almost, automatic dick-ness of most Chicago giants in any field. Making the music is natural, killing shows is natural, but the politics is something I don’t think I’ll ever like or get used to.
What is the worst job you ever had?
I worked as a fucking shelf stocker in a grocery store when I was 17 and it was hands down the most mundane, unacceptable way to spend any amount of time, ever. I ended up getting fired because a younger black guy asked me where the bathroom was and ended up eating a box of generic pop tarts and leaving the wrappers all over. My boss asked me If I knew him because he saw us talking on the security camera, and after I explained how I only told him how to get to the bathroom, he goes “You all know each other, how about you go home until your ready to ‘trick’ on your friend”.. He was such a racist prick. Never shop at Pans Food in Oak Park.
