How do you supplement your career as a musician?
I used to teach at Columbia, then quit that for an even cushier job. But I got laid off. It was really a blessing in disguise. It opened up a lot more opportunities for me to take on as a musician. I gotta say it’s not always easy living song to song, but I’m fortunate enough to pay my bills from only doing what I love.
Do you have a side-hustle?
Pool shark.
What is the worst job you ever had?
Working at Bennigans WHILE I HAD A MCDONALDS COMMERCIAL AIRING. I used to look up from taking orders and hear/see my song in the commercial and just say “the checks will come Young Fox. Fuck these potato skins bruh.”
What is your biggest obstacle as an artist trying to make it in a busy industry?
Honestly, it’s tough as shit to keep this gig in the Windy City. Out in LA or NYC or even Seattle I can get exactly what I deserve for beats or for production. But here in the Chi people think $1,000 is enough to record an entire album. It’s not a pride issue at all. I just know I won’t always get what I deserve from the Chicago collective.
