New Slaves
When a song’s debut is projected on landmarks across the world, that’s when you really know it’s something special. “New Slaves” is transcendent in the sense that no other rapper is really talking about the things Kanye mentions on this track. It’s worth it to read through all the annotations on Rap Genius, because the shit is deep. Kanye’s performance of “New Slaves” on SNL was just as powerful as the projections, and the way he self-censored himself is pretty spectacular.
“New Slaves” also contains “the best rap verse of all time,” in which Kanye snaps on a long, minimal beat. Then he brings Frank Ocean in at the end to help sing/change the mood up. These are the kind of tracks that Drake is putting out now. On “0 to 100 / The Catch Up” we get Drake going off on a simple beat, with James Blake chiming in at the end. Peep the influence?
